The University of Dundee was established by Royal Charter on 1 August 1967. The creation of the University was due to increasing political pressures to admit more students to higher education. Christopher Whatley was educated at the University of Strathclyde. He joined the History Department at Dundee University in 1979. After a period at the University of St Andrews he returned to Dundee in 1992. He was awarded the Bonar Chair of Modern History in 2000 and became Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences in 2002.
